General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems erect, solitary, simple or branched above, 10-50 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves several, oblanceolate or spoon-shaped, stalked; stem leaves opposite, lanceolate to egg-shaped, unstalked, 2-5 cm long, lowermost somewhat reduced.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of loose, terminal or axillary clusters of stalked flowers; corollas purplish-green or bronze, tubular, 10 mm long, 4- to 5-lobed, the lobes cleft nearly to the base, each lobe with 1-5 mm slender spurs; calyces 1/2 the length of the corollas, deeply 4-lobed, the lobes lanceolate; stamens 2/3 the length of the corollas; anthers 0.5-0.6 mm long.
Fruits:
Capsules, oblanceolate; seeds oblong, round in cross-section, wingless, glabrous or granular, light-brown, 1.2-1.4 mm long. vol3_5

Habitat / Range

Moist meadows and open forests in the montane zone; infrequent in SE and NE BC; E to NF and S to NY, MI, SD, MT and MX.
